Fundraising for the Charity of the Year
Colleague involvement is critical to the raising of millions of pounds for the HBOS Foundation's Charity of the Year.
Colleague involvement and support for the Charity of the Year starts with a celebrity TV broadcast across the group and presentation of the case for support for the 3 short listed charities. Colleagues vote over a 24 hour period for their favourite charity to choose the Charity of the Year.

HBOS plc colleagues raise millions of pounds for UK charities supported every
step of the way by the HBOS Foundation.
The current charity of the year, as voted for by HBOS plc colleagues, is CLIC Sargent and the challenge is to raise £1 million in a year - referred to as the Million £ Challenge.
Working in partnership with the charity, HBOS plc colleagues come up with every conceivable fund raising idea, from head shaving and leg waxing to sky diving and climbing, in order to hit the target. All this fundraising activity is supported by the HBOS Foundation which matches all funds raised by HBOS plc colleagues, challenging them to raise £500,000 which the HBOS Foundation then matches, pound for pound.

"Everyone at CLIC Sargent is incredibly grateful to HBOS colleagues for choosing us to be the HBOS Million £ Challenge charity for 2008.
Funds raised will go to help families who, on top of the trauma of having a very sick child, are also in financial crisis. This support will make a tangible difference to many lives at this very difficult time."
Carole Easton,
Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent

Fundraising in 2007
Colleagues, customers and shareholders across the UK and Ireland raised £3.6m for the Million £ Challenge in 2007. Sponsored events, quizzes, dress down days and fundraising fests were par for the course as everyone pulled together to do their bit.
This made it the most successful Challenge to date.

Each January colleagues across HBOS plc have the opportunity to vote for one of three charities that will become the "Million £ Charity of the Year" for HBOS plc colleagues. Colleagues are able to watch a special HBOS plc V broadcast showing videos of each of the short-listed charities, explaining their work and how they would spend £1 million if they were chosen.
In January 2008, over 31,500 colleagues voted, choosing CLIC Sargent over Age Concern and Diabetes UK. The 'runner up' charities receive an initial £50,000 each, and once the £1 million target has been reached, any additional funds will be split between all three charities.
In addition, HBOS Volunteering will work closely with these charities throughout the year, raising awareness of their work, and promoting colleague-volunteering activities.

"On behalf of all the charities benefiting we would like to express our thanks. The money raised for the British Heart Foundation through the 2007 Million £ Challenge will fund 15 new BHF Heart Nurses who will visit patients at home and help them recover – that's an extra 75,000 nursing hours."
Peter Hollins, CEO British Heart Foundation

Fundraising efforts don't just stop at one charity - hundreds of other causes
are supported by HBOS plc colleagues and benefit from the Matched Funding Scheme.
Colleague Matched Funding
The HBOS Foundation considers the fundraising done by HBOS plc colleagues for their local communities to be a priority. To maximise the great work done by colleagues, the Foundation matches pound for pound, money raised by HBOS plc colleagues up to a maximum of £500, boosting their local charitable donations even further.
Colleague Matched Funding has grown significantly since the merger, and in 2007 the HBOS Foundation and 2,100 colleagues donated over £2.15m through this scheme. It's a great way for us to support HBOS plc colleagues in benefiting the local charities that matter to them, no matter how large or small.
